“Michiana” is the stretch of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan around South Bend — and it packs beaches, dunes, wineries, and postcard small towns into easy day-trip range. Here’s a weekend’s worth.
Day one: the dunes
Indiana Dunes National Park is about an hour west. Climb the big dunes for a Lake Michigan panorama, swim if the season allows, and stop in Chesterton on the way back. Closer to home, Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan offers the same sand with smaller crowds.
Day two: harbor country
Southwest Michigan’s “Harbor Country” is a string of beach towns — New Buffalo, Three Oaks, Sawyer — dotted with wineries, breweries, and antique shops. It’s 40 minutes from downtown South Bend and feels like a different world.
Base camp: your place downtown
The best part of exploring Michiana is coming back to a real kitchen, a comfortable bed, and a city with dinner waiting. That’s the whole idea.
